What Is Nutritional Testing?

Most people are aware of conventional medical testing procedures being utilized today; however, as good as these tests are in providing a general picture of a person’s state of health, they leave much of the true health condition out of the bigger picture.  In other words, the “cause“ of a particular health problem is often not addressed, and, as a result, the “symptom” is what receives the attention.  And, these imbalances can lead to future health problems if not addressed and corrected while there is still time.  By knowing the state of health of the body’s internal environment, and finding any weaknesses before major damage is done, certain steps can be taken to “optimize” the “internal climate” in order to “minimize” any accumulated damage.  This is what we refer to as Preventive Care.  Nutritional Testing is NOT used to diagnose, rather, it is used to obtain a current picture of the effects of nutrition and lifestyle habits on the individual that may very well be the cause for adverse health issues that are being experienced.

Long-term good health and productivity depend upon certain preventive measures taken on a regular basis.  Symptoms are the first “outward” indication, or signs, that something is wrong, but symptoms are the last thing in the initial series of degenerative changes that reveal a process that is not supporting good health.  These processes can sometimes take years to manifest any “outward”, noticeable symptoms. This is why Nutritional Testing is very important.  By monitoring the ongoing internal environment of the body, utilizing cutting-edge technology, and the latest scientific research available in health and wellness, we are able to obtain the hidden picture that precedes the symptoms.  It is an “Early Warning System”, designed to provide otherwise unavailable information about the direction in which a person’s state of health is headed.

Unless you know the “WHAT” about your body, and stop treating only the symptoms, or, worse yet, believing that the lack of noticeable symptoms is proof that you are healthy, you may be wasting a lot of valuable time and money with a “shot-in-the-dark” approach, such as self-diagnosing and/or ingesting large quantities of the latest “miracle herb, mineral or vitamin”.  This is only trial and error – truly GUESSWORK– and will not work because it is not the proper protocol to achieving a nutritional balance of the body’s systems.

When symptoms arise, it has been usual and customary to address the symptoms by attempting to relieve, or suppress, those symptoms with temporary means.  Nutritional Testing looks at the internal environment of the body to determine the “cause”; therefore, producing a more detailed analysis of the processes going on.  The earliest indications of future adverse health conditions can be detected, which provides feedback on the present health condition, and whether the body is maintaining a state of good health, or whether it is allowing premature degenerative damage to take place at the cellular level.  Degenerative changes occur over time, and on a “micro” level, eventually leading to the breakdown of one or more systems within the body.

Today, most people know there is a nutritional or biochemical basis for many illnesses and diseases, and they expect their medical counsel to discover the triggering event of the sickness, and correct it.  Unfortunately, many people are not taught the proper methods for correcting their health problems, such as balancing body chemistry with whole foods and herbs ~ and, they are not taught proper dieting techniques ~ along with healthstyle and lifestyle changes.  In other words, most people are unaware that it is awareness and self-responsibility that creates a healthy body and a state of homeostasis and well-being.  Most everyone wants to be as healthy as possible; we want and seek good advice about our state of health; we know that as healthy individuals we will feel good, be cheerful, energetic, vibrant, and be able to handle most of life’s stresses that come along.   After all, we are faced with at least seven different types of stress today!  Most of us would rather eliminate the use, and cost, of drugs, but we don’t know how to the right “drugless” methods of disease control.  There are many people who actually ask their doctors, “Why did I get sick, and what am I to do about it now?” Oftentimes they are told that their illness is just “stress related”.  Why?  Because most all illness and disease is “Stress Related”. The detective work of discovering the “diagnosis” is the basic tenet (and fun) of the average medical practitioner.  From medical school training, to medical references, to medical literature and medical journals, the pharmaceutical industry appears to “control” our doctors, their way of thinking, and the information they provide to their patients. Yet, many times they still cannot answer the basic patient’s question, “Why did I get sick?”

Dysfunction within any organism is primarily due to a deteriorating internal environment which allows certain “cause and effect” changes to occur over a period of time.  Let’s look at an example for comparison purposes:  If you use poor grades of oil in the engine of your automobile, or if you just neglect to change the oil, over time it will cause premature wear and tear on the internal “moving” parts.  However, timely oil changes, tune-ups, and preventive maintenance will greatly extend the lifetime, and performance of the automobile.  The human body is really no different!  The only material our body has to build/rebuild healthy cells and defend against foreign invaders (free radicals, toxins, pollution, stressors, etc.) is what we feed it.  You cannot have a healthy, well-functioning body by feeding it inferior materials and neglecting the preventive maintenance that is required.  Every health problem has a “cause” and “effect”.  The “cause” is something that allows the degenerative process to begin in the first place.  The “effect” becomes the outward indications and symptoms that are the body’s way of saying, “Help, I can no longer adapt and continue functioning without some immediate support!”

So, the question still is, “Why did you get sick?” Your body is a wonderfully constructed work of anatomical, biological, and bio-energetic art.  However, it requires constant attention and intelligent care, to include:  Optimal Fuel, Safe Fluids, Positive Social Interaction, Adequate Rest and Sleep, and appropriate Exercise.  How do you get well, stay well, live a long, pain-free, productive life with no major diseases and illness?  All diseases have to start somewhere.  Quiet, subtle changes in a person’s metabolism start without fanfare ~ vague symptoms of uneasiness, mild aches and pains, odd rashes that come and go, fatigue, not feeling rested after a full night’s sleep, sense of humor slipping, slight feeling of anxiety for no apparent reason, unusual edginess, unclear and foggy thinking, more colds and flu than usual, hair unmanageable (or loss of); home, social life, school, job, etc., have no appeal anymore ~ these may appear singularly, or in combination.  Based on these symptoms, many practitioners have no way of establishing a diagnosis, except for the waste baskets of neurasthenia, stress, or hypochondriasis.

Through proper Nutritional Testing a person can obtain meaningful answers to their questions of, “Why did I get sick, and what can I do about it?”  Nutritional Testing addresses these health concerns ~ based upon the collection of vitalistic (cause) – and not mechanistic (symptom) information.  High-tech methods of science, technology, and computerization, can allow a person to get back on the road to better health and well-being, in order to reach a state of health and homeostasis (balance) that is incompatible with disease.  It will help a person feel better, reduce the perception of stress, work on eliminating the cause of any adverse health conditions and illnesses, etc.  Education on some basic rules about how the body works is paramount in being able to recognize “signs” and “symptoms” that suggest deviations from good health.  As a result a person can become self-empowered and take self-responsibility to achieving an optimal level of health ~ become free from annoying conditions, and develop a buoyancy and zest for life – once again.

The key principle that encompasses Nutritional Testing is:

NutriTec Symptom Survey

Balancing Body Chemistry with Whole Foods and Herbs

After entering a new millennium a few years ago, many people tend to think that the concept of “Balanced Nutrition” is the latest medical breakthrough.  However, that is hardly the case, because over the past 150 years we have been given pioneers, such as:  Dr. Antoine Bechamp (1818 – 1908); Dr. John Tilden (1851 – 1940); Dr. Weston Price (1870-1948); Dr. Francis Pottenger (1901- 1967); Dr. Melvin Page (1894 - 1984); and Dr. Royal Lee (1895 – 1967).

  • Dr. Antoine Bechamp:  His research leads to a practicable theory on how the phenomenon of Pleomorphism has led to a foundation for other pioneering research.
  • Dr. John Tilden:  His research on Toxemia is a building block to understanding diseases.
  • Dr. Weston Price:  His studies show us the dangers and the impact of what he called the “foods of modern civilization” on primitive groups around the world.
  • Dr. Francis Pottenger:  His famous studies on cats and their diets points out genetic disposition and degeneration through malnutrition.
  • Dr. Melvin Page:  His several thousand case studies led to one of the first Mind-Body connections. He explained the importance of the Calcium-Phosphorus Ratio, and developed a unique method of measuring the body – known to some as “The Anthropological Body Measurements”, and to others as “The Endocrine Body Measurement”.  These tools give today’s practitioners tremendous insight into “balanced body chemistry”.
  • Dr. Royal Lee:  With his many inventions and over 100 patents to his credit, Dr. Lee’s initial training was as a dentist.  The high-speed dental drill is a highly acclaimed invention of Dr. Lee.  The quest for nutritional balance then led him to invent the “Endocardiograph”.  And, his insight into the biochemistry of the food chain focused attention on whole food concentrates and nutrition.  Many of today’s discoveries in nutrition find their basis in the fundamentals set out by Dr. Lee’s research over 40 years ago – and these supposedly “new” breakthroughs only confirm Dr. Lee’s findings.

Dr. Page and Dr. Lee were friends and collaborators for over 50 years, and shared their beliefs in nutrition and balanced body chemistry in many projects.  As early as 1939, these two nutritional pioneers collaborated on a Symptom Survey Questionnaire to help identify imbalances in body chemistry – well before the Cornell University Study and Symptom Questionnaire became standard procedure for practitioners’ use.

The purpose of the Symptom Survey is to allow an individual / patient to voice their perception of his/her symptoms.  Only through the quantity of questions in the Symptom Survey and the person’s rating of their symptoms can the practitioner expect to find the root cause.  The symptoms listed on the survey form are grouped in a manner to extract foundational problems rather than focus on individual symptoms.  A further look into the Symptom Survey reveals intricate relationships between the symptoms in a group – a group to other groups – and a symptom to all other symptoms as a whole.    The ability to extract the basic information in the hand-tally method of calculating a Symptom Survey is limited to weighting each symptom with a value of ONE (1). This approach, therefore, foregoes the intricacies of the in-depth relationships mentioned above.  With the advent of computer automation, the hand-tally method was translated into a computer program.  Today a new Symptom Survey Program has been developed to look at all aspects of the survey.  The Evaluation Software Program that we use compiles eight different levels of relationships – and, in addition, a section specific to Male and Female is included.  This gives the practitioner a more complete picture of each individual’s body chemistry.

ElectroDermal Screening
The Body Electric and Cellular Biology

ElectroDermal Screening (EDS) is an overall term for instrument-based methods that provide information about the health of the body via electrical measurements of the skin at various points on the hands and feet.  EDS combines 21st Century technology with the ancient healing arts of homeopathy and acupuncture.  It was first developed around 50 years ago in Germany by a medical doctor named Reinhard Voll.  The technique was originally, and still is sometimes referred to as, “Electro-Acupuncture according to Voll” – or EAV.  The technique has continually improved since the 1940’s.

Dr. Voll’s “Acupuncture Doll” showing Acupuncture Points for measuring electrical conductivity.

Picture-36.gifIn the 1940’s, Dr. Reinhard Voll was studying the Chinese acupuncture meridian system when he had an interesting idea.  He reasoned that if acupuncture theory was correct, and channels of energy, in fact, did run throughout the body coming to the skin’s surface at various “points” along the way, there should be a way to measure this energy. So, Dr. Voll constructed a device to measure the electrical conductivity of acupuncture points on the skin using a stylus-shaped electrode made of brass.  It was basically an ohm meter.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, a form of bodily energy ~ called “chi” ~ is generated in internal organs and circulates throughout the body, forming paths near the surface of the skin, called “meridians”.  This whole-body network is referred to as the Meridian System.  Acupuncture points are points on the skin, usually located on meridians, where the circulation of “chi” can be manipulated.  By stimulating an acupuncture point on the skin through pressure, suction, heat, or needle insertion, the circulation of “chi” is affected – which, in turn, affects related internal organs.  The meridian energy flow carries with it information about the internal organs that can be used in diagnosis.  This is the basis of the ElectroDermal Screening Test (EDST).  The device used in the EDST is the ElectroDermal Screening Device (EDSD), which works by measuring electrical resistance and polarization at acupuncture points and meridians.  Through these safe, skin-level measurements, it is possible to analyze the bio-energy and bio-information produced by internal organs and systems.  Dr. Voll originally developed a system of acupuncture point electro-therapeutics, but he soon discovered that when an internal organ’s function or structure changes, the performance of the related meridian and acupuncture points also changed – and this change could be measured using a device, such as the EDSD.

Dr. Voll was not concerned about measuring the body’s energy itself ~ but rather the body’s ability to conduct this energy.  And, in so doing, he made two important discoveries.  First, Dr. Voll compared the acupuncture point measurements of healthy patients to those of patients who had conventionally diagnosed diseases.  He found that the electrical conductivity of healthy acupuncture points measured within given “normal” range, while readings outside of this range revealed disturbances in the tissues and organs traditionally associated with these points.  In addition, he also noticed that major disturbances in the body produced a downward drop, or steady decay, of the conductivity indicator as the point was being measured.  This became known as the “indicator drop”.

Second, he discovered that medicines placed in the proximity of the patient could change acupuncture point readings.  When a colleague of his held a particular bottle of medication in his hand for a condition he was experiencing, a different reading taken from the measurement points was obtained.  When the person put the bottle aside and another reading was taken, there was a dramatic difference, and this pattern repeated as often as desired.  This became known as “medicine testing”.  So, it was in 1945 that Dr. Voll discovered – quite by accident -- that a medicine placed in contact with a patient’s body effects the readings of an electrodermal screening device.  When a point is located that reads below 50, above 60, or has an Indicator Drop (ID), various reagents can be tested in the process called medicine testing.  While checking branch points (see below for explanation) can be used to specify more refined locations of the disturbance, medicine testing serves to specify etiology and selection of medications for treatment.  Medicine testing is performed on any abnormal points that are not “balanced”. The practitioner’s goal is to find one, or a combination of reagents that will balance the point, i.e., cause the point tested to exhibit a “good” reading and to not have an ID.

Medicine testing can be used to test any medicine or nutritional supplement administered to patients, including allopathic, homeopathic, nutritional and herbal medicines.  Most practitioners use the EDSD as an adjunct to their regular practice.  Homeopathic preparations appear to be particularly useful.  They are made by diluting and shaking an original substance in a special process called “potentization” – often to the point where not a single molecule of the original substance remains in the preparation. What remains is the “vibrational signature” of the original substance stored in water. Homeopathic remedies seem to work extremely well in the EDST, because they are distilled samples of vibrational information, with an informational content that is clearer than other medicines. There appears to be a distinct similarity between the information in homeopathic remedies and the biological information that circulates throughout the body – primarily through the meridian system.

Therefore, EAV started a revolution in medicine, because now doctors had a noninvasive method that allowed them to evaluate their patients at the core energetic level. EAV also helped practitioners prescribe the best medicines for each patient by testing them first “in circuit” to confirm their effectiveness.  Using electrical measurements for evaluation purposes is not unique to EDS.  Conventional medical devices that use electrical current for patient evaluation include the commonly used electrocardiograph (ECG), to measure heart rhythms – and electroencephalograph (EEG).  The biofeedback instruments commonly used by contemporary psychologists are based on galvanic skin response (GSR) circuitry, which represents a change in the electrical resistance of the skin in response to a change of emotional state.  From a technical viewpoint, EDS machines are essentially biofeedback instruments, since both use a GSR circuit with visual and/or auditory displays to signal a change in the patient’s state.

The ElectroDermal Screening Test
Measuring Electrical Resistance on an Acupoint using the ElectroDermal Screening Device (EDSD)
a
A typical examination with the EDSD begins with the four quadrant measurements (hand-to-hand; foot-to-foot; right hand to foot; and left hand to foot).  These are measurements of whole-body energy levels.  This is followed by a check of the 40 control measurements points (CMPs) – one for each of the 40 meridians located on the hands and feet -- some of which are traditional, and some of which were discovered by Dr. Voll.  The CMPs show the general condition of everything associated with that meridian, and the 40 hand and foot meridians cover virtually every body part and function.  An examination of 40 CMPs alone offers the practitioner a very good overview of a patient’s condition.  The other points along a meridian are called “branch points”, and are checked if the CMP reading is low.  They offer more specific information than the CMP; for example, the branch points on the two heart meridians include the aortic valve, mitral valve, pulmonary valve, tricuspid valve, conduction system, and coronary arteries. A problem in the coronary arteries would probably affect the circulation CMP and the coronary arteries branch point, but not necessarily other points.

ElectroDermal Screening can be used to help recognize a patient’s organ dysfunctions even before physiological symptoms manifest themselves.  It can identify pathogens and toxins that are making the patient sick, and ascertain what medicines, supplements, and other remedies are helpful, or harmful, to the patient.  It can determine the dosages that should be administered for maximum effect.  It does all this quickly, inexpensively and non-invasively.  EDS is based upon the principles of quantum physics and traditions of energy medicine.  It has revealed undetected gum infections that were causing chronic fatigue; mercury toxicity causing paralysis; parasites that related to underlying immune disorders; and the hidden causes of numerous other health conditions that had eluded conventional physicians for years.

Allergy Testing

One of the most popular and effective uses of medicine testing relates to allergies.  The results of EDST allergy testing have been compared to standard diagnostic modalities, such as:  RAST; Serum IGE; Intra-Dermal Allergy Skin Testing; Food Re-challenge Testing; and Allergy History Analysis.  EDST medicine testing of allergies was shown to be as accurate and effective as any of these.  EDST results were similar to food re-challenge testing – which is widely considered the most effective of the standard methods.

Dentistry and EAV

In his research, Dr. Reinhard Voll found that every tooth relates to different organs and tissues within the body.  For example, the canine tooth was found to be related to the eye, liver, and gall bladder, and the front teeth are related to the bladder and reproductive organs.  So if, for example, someone were to have a root canal in one of the front teeth, that tooth may affect the ovary or uterus, and it may be the underlying problem.  It is a two-way street, in that problems in the organs can affect the teeth, and problems in the teeth can affect those organs.  When dental work is performed on specific teeth the underlying organ needs to be supported.  EAV also should be used before and after the removal of an amalgam.  Silver fillings in the mouth, which are 50% mercury, are a very great problem.  Mercury leaches into all parts of the body from the mouth.  Studies have shown that the amount of mercury in the brain of autopsied patients directly correlates to the amount found in the mouth.  EAV can be used to screen for heavy metals, including mercury toxicity.  It can also be used to check the effect that root canals are having on the corresponding organs.  EAV is the best way to find a “cavitation” or a hole remaining in the bone after removal of a tooth.  Cavitations become a focus for problems in corresponding organs.  Dr. Voll felt that 80% of all health problems had major causes in the oral cavity.  Therefore, this means that the dentist is an integral part of the healing process.

Cellular Biology

Cellular biology explains that all cells have two types of antenna-like receptors on their surface.  While the first type of receptor is designed to detect bio-chemical substances, such as nutrients or hormones in the body, the second type of receptor is designed specifically to receive electromagnetic signals from the surrounding environment.  All matter vibrates at a specific and unique frequency as a result of the electric charges of the particles at the atomic level.  These vibrating, electrically charged particles emit electromagnetic waves.  This means that every medicine – or any other substance – produces its own unique electromagnetic signature.  This fact can be demonstrated through the Science of Spectroscopy, which can identify substances by the energy fields they produce.  Cells are a hundred times more sensitive to electromagnetic signals than chemical signals.  Conventional medicine is still based on the outdated mechanistic physics of the 19th Century, as if the body works like a machine.  It still holds the foundational belief that life processes can be described and understood on a chemical level.  While quantum theory in the 1920s represented a revolution in science, its biological implications have yet to be integrated into biological science, although undercurrents have been recognized by many important scientists.  Dr. Werner Heisenberg said, “The opinion that living processes can be explained only by the methods of physics and chemistry and that there are no biological forces is not in congruence with quantum theory.”  These ideas suggest not only that living systems can recognize electromagnetic fields, but that they also play an essential role in the body’s survival.  It makes perfect sense that intelligent living systems would include a way for every cell to receive information on the activities taking place in every other part of the body. While the movement of chemicals from place to place in the body is one important means of communication, it is too slow to account for the rapid transfer of information that actually takes place.

Every function in the body depends on the correct energy.  All disease initially begins as a functional disturbance that only becomes a clinically recognizable disease over time.  This is one reason why so many people have symptoms that cannot be diagnosed using conventional methods.  It there are no telltale morphological findings, conventional medicine is often at a loss to explain the problem.  This primacy of energy over the material has been known since ancient times.  For example, traditional Chinese medicine clearly states this important principle as “blood follows chi” – which means that the material aspect of the body is subordinate to the energetic – and not the reverse!  Nobel Laureate in Medicine – Albert Szent Gyogyi – noted over 40 years ago: “In every culture and medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy.”

The ElectroDermal Screening Test is one of the most thorough, powerful, and promising modern, wholistic medical methodologies.  The EDST succeeds at addressing the body wholistically for a number of reasons:

  1. A standard EDST examination enables the practitioner to quickly and safely collect information on 40 different individual systems.  In other words, all of the body’s individual parts are covered in an examination.
  2. The bio-information signal read by the EDSD is a very direct and true description of the condition of the body, since it is created by the body.
  3. The meridian network regulates, or at least participates, in every type of bodily function, so naturally it is a very good means by which to monitor the function of the whole body.
  4. Medicine testing allows the practitioner to test any and every type of medication and/or modality on the individual patient, including those made from herbs, metals, nosodes, or sarcodes. This allows the practitioner to explore all types of available treatments, and determine possible side effects with no risk to the patient.
  5. EDST is a powerful tool that can directly access the body’s sophisticated communication and control network.  In this way, EDS devices can help practitioners reveal medical conditions that are beyond the reach of conventional medicine because they provide a way to evaluate the patient at the energetic level ~ where all disease begins and ends.
