The Importance of Proper Nutrition

bar

The importance of proper nutrition in promotion and maintenance of the human body has been supported by numerous clinical trials and medical experts. In fact, the body requires a daily supply of essential nutrients to carry out function. It cannot succeed in accomplishing the millions of daily physiologic tasks if not provided these essential nutrient co-factors. It is without question, the demand for nutrition is significantly increased in health challenges.

Nutraceuticals are fast becoming an important part of complementary and integrative medicine practices and dietary supplements.  Nutraceuticals, frequently referred to as functional foods, are natural substances found in food products that provide medicinal or health benefits.  Some research suggests that nutraceuticals can also assist in the prevention of disease.

As research and public awareness about nutraceuticals continues to increase, more and more people are discovering the nutritional benefits of including nutraceuticals in their regular diet.  Nutraceuticals cover a wide range of dietary supplements, and can be isolated nutrients, or herbal products. Regular inclusion of functional foods as a dietary supplement will naturally contribute to healthier living and a strengthened immune system.

Nature’s Blueprint

The sun, rain, soil, bacteria and plant root structures combine to produce one of Nature's miracles:  The conversion of nutrient particles found within the soil into minerals that are bio-available to both plants and people. For nutrients to be bio-available, they must:

  • Have physical characteristics for cellular recognition
  • Possess an appropriate size for absorption and cellular entry
  • Be Water-Soluble or compatible, as plants and the human body have a water majority
  • Have a strong degree of elemental integrity and purity

The Earth’s atmosphere once contained 40% oxygen, but today the air we breathe only contains 16% to 19% oxygen – ONE-HALF what our body was designed for!  Many renowned medical researchers have produced evidence correlating a lack of oxygen to virtually all diseases.  In 1905, very few people had cancer – the oxygen level at that time is estimated to have been about 30%.  In the 1940’s, the oxygen level in our atmosphere measured 25%, and one out of twenty Americans had cancer.  Today, one-third of Americans are diagnosed with cancer, and within the next 5-10 years it has been estimated that the number will rise to 50% of the population that will be experiencing some form of cancer.  “The growth of cancer cells is initiated by a relative lack of oxygen.  Cancer cannot live in an oxygen-rich environment.” ~ Dr. Otto Warburg

Oxygen is the key element to good health and is also needed to help assimilate every nutrient known to man.  “In all serious diseases we find a low oxygen state . . . low oxygen in the body is a sure indicator for disease . . . hypoxia, or a lack of oxygen in the tissues, is the fundamental cause of all degenerative disease.” ~ Dr. Steven Levine

Diet and Nutrition has a direct correlation to our oxygen content.  For example, unlike vegetables, “junk foods” are very low in oxygen and very high in preservatives.  Eating junk food makes the body use up its valuable oxygen reserves to oxidize these preservatives.  It is impossible to change the atmosphere but there is finally a way we can increase the oxygen content in our bodies.

Nature Has Been Ambushed

Nutrients within the soil were intended to be taken up by plants and then delivered to humans through their harvest of the land. America leads the world in nutrient-depleted soil. This fact has been quietly known for decades. Even the US government, in US Senate Document 264 from the 74th Congress in 1936stated the following:
foodguidepyramid.jpg

“99% of the American people are deficient in minerals... The alarming fact is that foods, fruits, vegetables, and grains now being raised on millions of acres of land no longer contain enough certain needed minerals and are starving us, no matter how much of them we eat.”

Facts are, even organically grown produce is still deficient in many vital minerals you need to maintain optimum health. Senate Document 264 further revealed that our soil was becoming depleted in vital minerals.  Now, 72 years later, things have gone from a bad situation to an even worse dilemma!  This is one of the main reasons we see so much illness and DIS-ease today than ever before.  When the foods we have to eat are nutritionally deficient before we get them, our bodies simply cannot make up for the loss on their own.  Each person must take self-responsibility to ensure that their body is being cared for and nourished in the way it was intended.

At the Earth Summit Statistics meeting in 1992, experts revealed information conclusively showing that farmlands in North America were 85% micronutrient depleted. (See chart above)

In 2002, leading medical researchers and clinicians recommended that every American use a daily multi-nutrient supplement to address the health dilemma of nutritionally poor diets (Journal of the American Medical Association, June 2002).

What Is the Importance of Body Balance?

Your body was designed to be healthy. The human body consists of water and minerals, both of which are essential to life.  A proper balance of minerals is required for appropriate function and electrical conductivity. So often we focus on what is unhealthy in the body - what needs to be fixed. The focus is not on how we can get the body healthy and balanced, but how can we fix the immediate problem. Along with this philosophy is the idea of body balance. Realize that it is when the body goes out of balance that disease sets in. Look at this very simple example: When we work late hours, are over-stressed, and eat poorly, most of us get sick or extremely run down. Is this surprising? Absolutely not! What is created? A completely unbalanced situation contributes to ill health. An excess or deficiency of any one mineral can throw the body out of its delicate health balance. When the body goes out of balance, pain and disease can set in.

Why Do I Need to Know About Health Supplement Minerals?

We are "living soil." Our bodies are made primarily of water and minerals. The biological matrix of our bodies requires that we have the proper balance of minerals for appropriate function and electrical conductivity. Vitamins, water, oxygen, food and rest are all critical aspects of our health. But, through our food, we absorb nutrients and vitamins which are like “boards and nails.” We still need to have a “hammer” to drive them into the human cells – minerals are the hammer!  As we provide our bodies with the proper supplementation of vitamins and minerals, it immediately utilizes these resources. However, to restore good health and regain the desired state of homeostasis (balance) is a process that takes a committed and consistent supplementation regimen over a period of time. Sometimes results can be realized in a matter of days, or weeks – but, for more significant results, oftentimes it can take months.

What are Minerals?

Inorganic substances occurring naturally in the earth's crust. They have certain chemical makeup and, usually, a crystal-like structure. Nutrients are found in food as a compound, rather than as a free element. Minerals are important in regulating many body functions.

Minerals

Boron
Calcium
Copper
Chromium

Iodine
Magnesium
Manganese

Phosphorus
Potassium

Silica
Selenium
Zinc

A mineral deficiency occurs when there is an inability to use one or more of the mineral elements needed for human nutrition. Causes are usually attributed to birth defects, digestive disorder, or lack of that mineral in the diet. Symptoms vary, depending on the particular function or functions of the element in helping growth and keeping the body healthy. All mineral deficiencies are treated by adding the specific element to the diet, either as a pill or in the right foods.

Minerals are part of all the body tissues and fluids. They are important factors in keeping physiological processes going. Minerals are part of all the body tissues and fluids. They are important factors in keeping physiological processes going.

They act in nerve responses, muscle contractions, and the changes of nutrients in foods.

They regulate electrolyte balance and the making of hormones.

They strengthen skeletal structures.
Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and vitamins are all organic substances. This means they are all compounds of the chemical element carbon. In addition to these nutrients, the human body requires certain chemical elements in their inorganic forms, or not bound to carbon. These elements in their non-organic forms, or all alone, are classified as dietary minerals. These nutrients participate in a multitude of biochemical and physiological processes necessary for the maintenance of good health.

Why are Minerals Important?

Minerals are essential to every function within the human body. Minerals and trace elements must exist in relative balance in the fluids, cells, organs, and tissues of the body to contribute to human health. Trace minerals do not function well in the body by themselves, but rather, in relationship to one another. For example, too much of one mineral can lead to imbalances in another. The goal is to achieve mineral balance in the body.

Why can't we get the minerals from our foods?

The combined factors of nutrient-depleted agricultural soils from centuries of use and synthetic fertilizers forcing crops to grow rapidly with no regard to nutrient absorption, results in foods having very little mineral nutritional value.
See Senate Document No. 264.

Will the Minerals React With Pharmaceutical Medicines?

Traditionally, mineral supplementation has been very safe. However, specific drugs may have specific guidelines for use. It is recommended that before starting any mineral or nutritional program, you check with your healthcare professional for possible interactions.

How do I Know What I Need?

Unless you know the “WHAT” about your body, and stop treating only the symptoms, or, worse yet, believing that the lack of noticeable symptoms is proof that you are healthy, you will not know the “HOW”. You may be wasting a lot of valuable time and money with a “shot-in-the-dark” approach, such as self-diagnosing (without any scientific basis, or nutritional knowledge) and/or ingesting quantities of the latest “miracle herb, mineral or vitamin”.  Worse yet is the common attitude – “Well, it worked for Cousin Harry, it should work for me, too”. Many people use this approach and go to their nearest grocery store and purchase huge amounts of vitamins, minerals, etc., with no real knowledge of what it is they are getting.  Then, after taking the “hodge-podge” they selected and achieving NO noticeable, nor positive, results, the only conclusion they can make is that “vitamin and mineral supplements do not work – it is just a waste of money!” This is the WRONG approach to improving and regaining health and wellness – it is only trial and error – truly GUESSWORK – and will not work because it is not the proper protocol to achieving a healthy nutritional balance of the body’s systems.

However, there is a RIGHT APPROACH to achieving vibrant health and wellness.  Step One in the “Right Approach” process is what HealthStyles4U refers to as the ACE method.

Awareness – Being aware of the symptoms the human body displays whenever it becomes out of balance and needs to be “tuned”.  Just like an automobile that periodically requires maintenance in order to function properly and run smoothly – so does the body require the same.  An individual must be aware that the body needs to be carefully monitored at all times if it is expected to function properly and maintain a state of health and well-being.  And, an individual must be aware of all the many “signals” the body gives out as an alert that something needs to be addressed and attended to.

Commitment – It requires commitment on the part of the individual – IF – that person truly desires to improve and maintain radiant, vibrant health and vitality. The human body was designed to live and function in a state of good health for many, many years.  Unfortunately, modern lifestyles and diets are taking their heavy, devastating tolls in ever-increasing numbers, as more and more illness, sickness and disease cripples and plagues our society. Therefore, a personal commitment to “wanting” to create, experience, live, and enjoy a better healthstyle and lifestyle is absolutely paramount to achieving the desired results.

Education – Individual health education is just as important as the type of education required for a career in the regular world – perhaps, more so.  Because, if an individual is not in a state of good health, usually their health will continue to deteriorate to the point that their career will end prematurely. Or, if it does not end, the individual becomes less productive and does not progress as originally intended – resulting in a shortened career, and one that is spent in a state of emotional, mental and physical stress, unhappiness, frustration, and depression.  Educating oneself empowers an individual to accept and take self-responsibility for their own state of health, which allows them to explore and experience various ways to improve and maintain their health and well-being, and, therefore, creates a well-balanced individual with a high self-esteem who is happy, well-adjusted, and more productive.

When symptoms arise, it has been usual and customary to address the symptoms by attempting to relieve, or suppress, those symptoms with temporary means.  Nutritional Testing and Evaluation looks at the internal environment of the body to determine the “cause”; therefore, producing a more detailed analysis of the processes going on.  The earliest indications of future adverse health conditions can be detected, which provides feedback on the present health condition, and whether the body is maintaining a state of good health, or whether it is allowing premature degenerative damage to take place at the cellular level.  Degenerative changes occur over time, and on a “micro” level, eventually leading to the breakdown of one or more systems within the body.

How Do I Learn What to Do?

Everyone needs good foundational health, including minerals, vitamins, proper pH, oxygen, hydration, antioxidants, a clean internal terrain, etc. The best way to discover your specific needs is to reflect upon your lifetime dietary habits and practices. In addition, look at your current health and those specific physical challenges you may be experiencing.

This is Step Two of the “Right Approach” process.

Long-term good health and productivity depend upon certain preventive measures taken on a regular basis.  Symptoms are the first “outward” indication, or signals, that something is wrong, but symptoms are the last thing in degenerative changes which reveal a process that is not supporting good health.  These processes can sometimes take years to manifest any noticeable symptoms. This is why Nutritional Testing and Evaluation is so important.  By monitoring the ongoing internal environment of the body, utilizing cutting-edge technology, and the latest scientific research available in health and wellness, we are able to obtain the hidden picture that precedes the symptoms.  It is an “Early Warning System”, designed to provide otherwise unavailable information about the direction in which a person’s state of health is headed.

Through proper Nutritional Testing and Evaluation a person can obtain meaningful answers to their questions of, “Why am I sick, and what can I do about it?” Nutritional Testing addresses these health concerns, based upon the collection of vitalistic (cause) – and not mechanistic (symptom) information.   It will help a person feel better, reduce stress, work on eliminating the cause of any adverse health conditions and illnesses, etc.  Education on the basic rules about how the body works is necessary in being able to recognize “signs” and “symptoms” that suggest deviations from good health.  As a result a person can become self-empowered and take self-responsibility to achieving an optimal level of health, become free from annoying conditions, and develop a buoyancy and zest for life – once again.

HealthStyles4U offers a Nutritional Testing and Evaluation Protocol that is designed to personalize a health assessment – a type to fit each individual and address their particular needs – pinpointing health deficiencies, and have a customized health regimen that allows you to detect any “slippage” at the latency level – then make the adjustments needed to correct any imbalances.

Can I Take Too Much?

It is important to note that any compound when taken in extreme excess can be unhealthy for the body. For example, even water, when taken in massive quantities, can be harmful. When analyzing the toxicity of a product or material, it is important to recall what contributes to toxicity in the body. These being:

  1. The inherent properties of the material ingested
  2. The dose of the material
  3. The rate of absorption by the body
  4. The ability of the material to accumulate in the body
  5. The rate and ability of the material to be excreted

There cannot be a blanket statement to cover all compounds, or even minerals and vitamins. Each respective ingredient has its own "biochemical uniqueness." Therefore, the US RDA recommends a suggested maximum amount of various substances to be taken each day. Finally, because of their water soluble and ionic nature, they are easily used and excreted by the body. However, all healthcare products should be taken with care. Any material when taken in extreme excess can be unhealthy for the body. We suggest to always follow the recommended dosages provided. If you wish to deviate from this, we suggest you do so under the care of a medical professional. As with all ingested materials, more is not always better. Taken in moderation, water-soluble minerals pose little, if any, threat of toxicity. Larger doses of water-soluble mineral products should be taken under the advice of a healthcare professional (specifically, iron is an element which should be taken in small doses unless otherwise advised).

Trace Minerals - Everything in Moderation

Minerals are essential to life. However, it is important that we follow nature's blueprint when it comes to the quantity and frequency of mineral use regarding supplements. There are different types of minerals. One classification is Macro-minerals. These minerals are found in abundance in the human body, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. They are plentiful in the human body and it is difficult to take too much of these types of minerals.

Another grouping of minerals are Trace Minerals. These minerals are also critical to physiologic function, but their quantity in the human body is much less. This is why they are called "trace" minerals. As such, it is very important to follow nature's blueprint when supplementing with these minerals. A few examples include selenium, germanium, chromium, manganese, and zinc. Trace minerals do not exist by themselves, but in relationship to one another. Too much of one mineral can lead to deficiencies or imbalances in another, resulting in poor health. Therefore, when it comes to trace mineral supplementation, it is important to keep the body in appropriate mineral balance, and doing so means not over-supplementing on trace minerals – i.e., “more is NOT better”.

It is important to note that any substance when taken in extreme excess can be unhealthy for the human body. Even water when taken in massive amounts can produce undesirable side effects in the body - it can even be lethal. Just think of eating a bowl of strawberries - one is good, but a big bowl full may give you an awful stomachache!
It is critical that individuals use good common sense and follow recommended dosages on products. The old saying, "if a little is good, a lot must be better", is definitely NOT TRUE when it comes to supplements, especially trace minerals.
