These cells are the fundamental building blocks of almost all living matter. Water is vital to the conduction ~ or flow ~ of electricity and magnetic energy in our bodies. There is not one part of the body’s system ~ physically or electrically ~ that can function in the absence of electrically alive water. Every living creature sips this drink of life, and without this "magic potion", life would cease to exist. Deprived of simple water, plants begin to droop and wither away to death. Seeds cannot germinate and no animal can survive without it. In the absence of water, the planet Earth would forever have remained one vast barren rock of lifeless desert. Water is the most important substance that the body needs - next to oxygen. The people of ancient times worshipped water's importance as the key to life. The Egyptian's worshipped the Nile River. The Hindus revered the Ganges River. In addition, the Greeks held water in the highest of holy substances; this is why their natural springs were chosen as sites for temples. Jesus even likened His gift of life to a well of crystal water (John 4:14; Rev.21:6). Despite the unbelievable importance of water, people today have yet to realize and appreciate the profound significance of its role in their lives. The significance of water becomes apparent to people when they understand the body's need for water. The human body is comprised of over 70 percent water, which is involved in all body functions. All chemical reactions of the body occur within the aqueous environment (fluid environment) of the body, and all solids (foods and nutrients) of the body are transported through this fluid medium. Water supports all nutritive processes, from digestion and absorption to utilization and excretion. Water is even essential for the simple act of swallowing, and is a constituent of all cells and tissues. The temperature of the body is even dependent on water, much like the radiator of a car. The body’s need for water is relentless. The fact that somewhere between two and three quarts of water per day can be used by the body for these important functions is paramount. As you can see, it is obvious that water is the most important nutrient in our body. Yet, it is the most under-rated of all. Proper hydration is crucial for the establishment and maintenance of optimal health. The most widely prescribed therapy in preventive medicine today is to drink plenty of pure water daily. As the story goes: "It is good for digestion, skin hydration, and helps flush toxins from the system that may otherwise increase to deadly levels." The logic is correct – but the solution may not work as we hope it would. For example: If you drink tap water, your body may be a dumping ground for bacteria, pesticides, heavy metals, carcinogens and parasites. The National Resource Defense Council recently found that 43% of all water systems, affecting over 120 Million people, violated federal health standards. Researchers have found that one-third of all gastrointestinal illnesses are caused by drinking polluted tap water. If you live in the country, run-off from farms, mining operations and feed-lots may be lacing your well water with known carcinogens – like pesticides and nitrates. If you live in the city, pollutants are likely to be even worse! Another example: Chlorine – which is meant to protect you from dangerous organisms – can double your risk of bladder, colon and rectal cancer – according to the National Cancer Institute. Chlorines accumulate in fatty tissues, such as the breast tissues, and can be found in body fat, blood, mothers’ milk and semen. With all this information on the vital nutrient for life, now you are probably wondering how much you need. The proper prescription is that we should drink one-half our body weight – in ounces – each day. So, the required amount will vary according to our actual weight. For Example: A 150-pound person should drink 75 ounces of PURE WATER every day for proper hydration. Do not count glasses – count ounces. Also, remember this: ONLY water counts for hydrating the body – juices and other fluids, caffeinated and non-caffeinated – do not count at all! The average adult loses between four and six pounds of water a day in the form of sweat, stool or urine. With a three percent loss of total body water, fatigue and decreased body functioning will ensue. A ten percent loss would be considered life threatening. With the daily body loss mentioned, exercise results in further losses of body water. Approximately one-half gallon of water will be lost during any light activity in moderate temperatures. One-half cup of water every 10-15 minutes should be consumed while exercising to make sure repletion is occurring and hydration is maintained. To translate, this equals at least two glasses of cool water for each pound of sweat loss. During the summer season and heat, the demand for water almost forces an individual to become a water warden. Activity and body weight are the factors in focus when determining the amount of water needed to maintain proper hydration. Fluid replacement is necessary, before, during, and after a workout because maintenance of water balance is critical. One important thing to remember is not to wait until your thirsty, but to drink to avoid thirst. Finally, fluid fancy has to be addressed. Which fluid do you prefer? The fluids that Americans ultimately ingest most often come from substances such as coffee, tea, beer, soda, and other recreational type beverages. The problem with these choices is that they may contribute in dehydrating the body rather than hydrating the system. These choices should not be relied upon for fluid replacement, even though they are made with water. Plain, pure water remains at the top of the list when choosing which fluid is right for you. If plain water is not your favorite right now, consider taking the two-week water test. For two consecutive weeks, focus on drinking the required amount of water throughout the day – but, make sure that you drink PURE WATER. Purified water tastes good, and after two weeks of drinking this body elixir, your body will develop a distinct "liking" for the water. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Low pH drinking water in individual households is strongly associated with the risk of Type 1 diabetes, according to results of a study reported in the September issue of Diabetes Care. Dr. Lars C. Stene, of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in Oslo, and colleagues first detected a significant association between diabetes and the use of well water, as opposed to water from waterworks, after questioning subjects in Vest-Agder county. In a survey of 85 individuals diagnosed with diabetes before age 15, and 1071 control subjects, the odds ratio for the association was 2.3. The researchers then analyzed tap water samples from the homes of 64 patients and 250 control subjects. The odds ratio for Type 1 diabetes was 5.56 for tap water with pH between 6.2 and 6.9 compared with water of pH 7.7 or above, after adjusting for potential confounders such as zinc concentration, maternal education, water source, area of residence, gender and birth year. The association for the trend was highly significant at p = 0.002. Higher concentrations of zinc were associated with a decreased risk of diabetes after adjusting for pH and the other confounders. Compared with zinc concentrations below 15 g/L, the adjusted odds ratio was 0.38 for concentrations between 45 and 74.9 g/L; for higher concentrations, the odds ratio was 0.28. "The mechanisms by which water acidity or mineral content may be involved in etiology of type 1 diabetes remain unknown, but the mechanisms are most likely indirect and may involve an influence on survival of microorganisms in the water," the investigators maintain. For example, enteroviruses or rotaviruses "that may be relevant in the etiology of type 1 diabetes" survive optimally at pH levels of about 6.2-6.9." Diabetes Care 2002; 25:1534-1538. Dr. Milan Bier, research biophysicist at the Veterans Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, told us that in his studies, "Chlorine was given in very diluted solutions to dogs, with the result that the dogs’ immune reactions were so interrupted it caused rejection of kidney transplants."
